Program Overview

Now in its 14th year, the American String Teachers Association of New Jersey (ASTA/NJ) Chamber Music Institute is an intensive classical music camp focusing on chamber music performance.  Participants perform and rehearse under the guidance of outstanding teaching artist faculty. Students participate in daily rehearsals, master classes, elective courses, special presentations, and a variety of social activities. The Chamber Music Institute features a concert and master class with a professional visiting artist ensemble and concludes with a performance by student ensembles. Students may audition to be placed in specially formed advanced ensembles; pre-formed ensembles are welcome.

The residential CMI program is open to students ages 12–23 who play the violin, viola, cello, or double bass (or, as we like to think of it, the ASTA family of instruments). In recent years, we have expanded enrollment to include brass, woodwind, piano, and classical guitar. A program for collegiate string players, including expert coaching in a specially-oriented chamber ensemble, is also available.

Whether you are an advanced chamber music player or a newcomer to the genre, ASTA/NJ CMI has much to offer in a fun, exciting environment.
